Why are Multivitamins Important?

I wasn’t always on board for multi-vitamins. Having grown up n the Flinstones vitamin era, I knew that they didn’t always mean “good health”. I also felt that all wellness should be tailored to the individual. But, that is a lofty goal for most. It requires vigorous and expensive testing. There are also multi-vitamin companies that have taken a lot of time and care into creating well tolerated and highly absorbable multi-vitamins nowadays. While I wouldn’t be reaching for something like Centrum, I have found some options that have set the bar high.

The bar must be set high when considering a multi-vitamin for Children especially. But, why would kids need a multivitamin? Kids these days are often depleted in many nutrients. Different factors such as picky eating, poor overall diet, and poorer quality foods have taken their toll on our health. Unfortunately, many Children have major nutritional gaps. That is where a high quality multi-vitamin comes in handy. It can ensure that major and common nutritional deficiencies are managed and optimal health is achieved.

Most kids these days would benefit from a multivitamin, regardless of diet. This is largely due to our food supply being much lower in essential vitamins than past generations. Due to poor management and farming practices, the soil we grow our foods in provide much less vitamins and minerals. It can be helpful to make sure kids are getting everything they need.

There are a few circumstances when a multi-vitamin would be a vital supplement for some Children:

  • If your child is a picky eater
  • If your child struggles with immune health or allergies
  • If your child is on a specific type of diet that would create nutritional gaps (ie. veganism or vegetarianism)
  • If your child is experiencing difficulty with developmental growth

5 Health Benefits of taking a Multi-Vitamin

It’s no surprise that managing optimal vitamin and mineral levels is beneficial for overall health. Children are growing and developing at a rapid rate and having the right levels of vitamins and minerals on board is essential. What are some benefits that can be seen when taking a multivitamin to fill nutritional gaps? Here’s a quick look:

  1. Immune Health: The Immune system only works at full speed when it has all the nutrition it requires. Vitamins A, C, D, and E are particularly important for Children who come into contact with viruses and bacteria often. Children can fight off infection more successfully with the proper vitamins on board.
  2. Bone Health: Children grow physically very rapidly and need all the nutritional support required for bone density. The most important Vitamins for this process are often calcium and Vitamin D.
  3. Brain Health + Mood: Similarly to physical health, Kids mental health is largely impacted by the nutrition they receive. We often see kids struggle to manage emotions when hungry which is partly due to blood sugar and partly due to a lack essential vitamins.
  4. Energy Levels: Kids are especially busy and need all the support they can get to continue to play and stay alert during school days. When kids have nutritional deficiencies, this can be challenging. B vitamins are especially important for energy production.
  5. Dental Health: Our dental health is largely dependant on proper nutrition. Without certain vitamins, teeth are prone to cavities and other issues. Fat soluble vitamins are especially important for dental health. Proper nutrition also leads to health jaw development.

How to Choose a High Quality Multivitamin for Kids

There are a few major things to consider when vetting a multivitamin for kids. Here are some helpful tips you can use when choosing a vitamin for your family.

Consider Methylated vs. Unmethylated Vitamins

Methylated vitamins are superior for a number of reasons. It is an important thing to look for when choosing the best multivitamins. Methylated vitamins are highly absorbable and tolerated by the entire population. There is a large number of individuals with genetic markers that make converting unmethylated vitamins very difficult. It can also create issues with proper functioning when they created clogs in the system.

Vitamins such as Vitamin B12 and Folic Acid are especially important to focus on when it comes to methylation. Always opt for a Vitamin that contains Folate (not Folic Acid). Folate is a naturally occurring form of Vitamin B9 that your body can absorb more readily. Folic acid is a synthetic form of B9 that most people have a hard time converting and utilizing. Folic Acid has created health issues for many and is not considered a high quality or methylated form of vitamin.

Vitamin B12 is another vitamin that requires a specific form to be absorbable by most. Methylcobalamin is a superior methylated form of Vitamin B12 and the best option in the industry. Ensure that your vitamins name this form of Vitamin B12 over others that are less tolerated and often remain unusable by the body.

Consider No Added Sugars or Fillers

This is huge, especially since most kids multivitamins are created as a palatable option like gummies. Gummy vitamins get a bad rap. And many are poor quality or filled with sugars and acids that can harm your dental health over time. It’s true, we were not made to consume candy every day. But, there are options that are better than gummy form out there that do NOT add sugars. Brands these days should be very conscious of adding unnecessary ingredients that can erode dental health over time.

Organic & Non-GMO Ingredients

There are so many options for multivitamins these days, so you can afford to be picky about the standards they set. Any added ingredients outside of the vitamins themselves should be organic. We know enough about pesticides and their erosion of our health, that avoiding them is especially important. Many companies will use poor quality fillers and ingredients to sweeten, flavour and bulk up their products. But, looking for an organic and non-GMO option is ideal.

Whole Food Added Ingredients

As mentioned above, many companies are steering toward healthier added ingredients because the market and consumers are calling for it. Another great option I am seeing from some companies is the use of whole food ingredients like fruits, mushrooms and vegetables to create flavors rather than synthetic options.

My #1 Choice: Hiya Kids Multivitamin

There are many higher quality multi-vitamins that are hitting the market. Companies are realizing that parents have become more knowledgable over the vitamins they give their kids. Gone are the days where petro-chemical filled flinstone vitamins with extra sugar and dyes were in every household. Kids have more options to choose from with higher quality ingredients and vitamin sources. It can be confusing to choose between the options available. So, I’ve chosen one of my favorite brands to review: Hiya Kids Multivitamin.

1. Hiya is Sugar-free Chewable Tablet, NOT a Gummy

Most Children’s multivitamins come in the form of a gummy. These are often loaded with sugar which isn’t ideal for overall health or dental health. Many dentists are recommending against gummy vitamins as they are seeing an increase in cavities and decay from sugars. Even if a gummy is sugar free, they often stick to the teeth and contain acids that can break down enamel over time. A gummy is not the best form of vitamin unless you are incredibly diligent of brushing and flossing immediately after consuming them every time. Hiya has created a tablet that is sugar free and safe for your teeth. Still tasty and palatable for Children.

2. Hiya Vitamins are Formulated using Current Research

Most multivitamin brands are basing their vitamin quality, dosages and more on outdated medical data from the 80’s. This is the case for most multivitamins who refuse to dig into the research and improve their formulations. Hiya has gathered current day data to ensure their formulas are as effective and science backed as possible.

3. Hiya uses Clean, Organic and Non-GMO Ingredients

The ingredients, including any vitamins sourced from fruits/vegetables and added ingredients are organic and non-genetically modified. They source the best quality vitamins and their added ingredients are simply an organic fruit and vegetable blend. This is one of the cleanest kids multivitamin ingredients decks I have personally seen on the market.

4. Hiya is sweetened with Monk Fruit, not Stevia or Chemical Sweeteners

Monk Fruit is one of the best natural sweeteners on the market. While other commonly used sweeteners like stevia can cause digestive upset and many other side effects, Monk fruit offers side benefits. Monk fruit has actually been shown to improve insulin resistance. It is one of the cleanest sweetening options on the market and many conscious brands are starting to use this in place of other controversial natural sweeteners.

5. Third Party Tested

for quality, heavy metals, microbials, and contaminants.

6. Hiya is Clean Label Project Certified

This is an extra level of certification that proves the brand has undergone rigorous third party testing to provide high quality, effective and safe vitamins. These standards are set higher and provide the consumer with an added layer of trust that their product is safe.

7. Hiya is FDA Registered and Complies with cGMP standards

This ensures effectiveness and quality are demonstrated. The product is high quality and manufactured in a facility where standards are met and product is high quality.

8. Hiya Vitamins Packaging is Eco-Friendly

Hiya Vitamins come in Glass Bottles (no plastic) and pouch refills. Their bottles also come with stickers that your kids can decorate and make their own, which is a sweet little touch. I love when companies remember who they are creating products for. As a Mother, I understand how something like decorating a bottle can help include kids in the process and make it fun. This also helps builds children’s compliance with taking their vitamins each day.

9. HIYA Kids Multivitamin is AFFORDABLE

Compared to many other brands, Hiya has made their vitamins affordable for the everyday family. This is especially important because all kids deserve access to good quality vitamins.

10. Hiya Kids Multivitamin Serving size is 1 Tablet per day

Most brands’ serving sizes range anywhere from 2-4 per day. This factors into compliance AND cost when you’re going through bottles so quickly. Hiya kids has formulated a tablet that contains their daily values in one.

11. Hiya uses Methylated forms of Vitamins where required

As mentioned above, methylated vitamins offer better absorbability to ALL children. There are certain genetic dispositions that is common in our population that do not absorb unmethylated forms of Vitamins like B. Hiya uses a methylated Folate (not synthetic and poorly absorbed folic acid) as well as a methylated form of Vitamin B12.

12. Hiya contains NO added sugars, artificial sweeteners, or food dyes

Many consumers have become more conscious of added fillers, chemical sweetener and synthetic food dyes. As a society we now understand the health implications of companies using these cheap added ingredients in products. Hiya does not formulate any of their products using synthetic and toxic sweeteners or food dyes. This allows all kids to enjoy their vitamins without unnecessary toxicity.

Other Favourites: Hiya Kids Daily Hydration Electrolyte Powder

Hiya has an entire line of kids vitamins. I especially love the multivitamin as well as the Hiya Kids Immune Blend and Hiya Kids Chocolate flavored Greens + Superfoods powder. But, I am especially excited for one of their newest product launches: Hiya Kids Daily Hydration Electrolyte Powder. Electrolytes are often formulated for adults and you don’t want to give the wrong amounts of these to children. It can cause imbalances and side effects if they are too high for them. Their little bodies do not need as much as ours. That being said, it is so important to replenish electrolytes in Children. This is especially important after illnesses like the stomach bug, after playing sports, or after being outside on hot days.

I love that there is finally a clean electrolyte on the market with children’s needs in mind. It has a pleasant berry flavor that is palatable and enjoyable. You can swap out those toxic dye filled sports drinks like Gatorade and keep a canister of Hiya Kids Daily Hydration electrolytes on hand instead. A great way to get kids to drink their water each day! Just another well formulated, clean and healthy option that you can use to swap out toxic alternatives in your household.
