The Best Natural and Non Toxic Hair Products of 2024

June 12, 2024

Hair products can be a bit of a barrier when it comes to switching to a natural beauty routine. Everyone has tried a shampoo that left their hair flat and greasy. I don’t blame anyone for wanting a hair product that works. Many might assume that natural hair products won’t work for them but I can tell you that using them has left me with longer, stronger, and healthier hair. I’ve been blogging in the green beauty and wellness industry for almost a decade. I have tried so many different products and so I wanted to share the best natural and non toxic hair products  have come across over the years.

* This post may include affiliate links. This means that products purchased from certain links will generate a small commission (At no extra cost to you). As always, I will only recommend brands that have passed my seal of approval and that I truly love. Thank you for supporting this little holistic space on the internet. *

Everyone has different hair types which can make suggesting a single hair product or line somewhat difficult. Fortunately, I have hair that hits quite a few subcategories so I’ve been able to see the ways a formula can effect it. For reference, I have naturally curly hair that has been color processed for over two decades. Over the years I’ve gone through a range of dry to oily hair and scalp thanks to hormonal shifts as I age and had children. Thankfully, I have been able to match effective natural and non toxic hair products for each of these stages of hair life. I have been trialing and testing various natural and non toxic hair products for over a decade to see which perform and which fall flat. We are fortunate to have so many options these days but that can also be a confusing starting point. So instead of taking over 10 years to trial all of the natural and non toxic hair products, I’ve done it for you and have compiled a list of the best options for a variety of hair types and needs.

While scrolling through this article, you will find options for shampoos, conditioners, hair oils, hair serums, detanglers, heat protectants, hair masks, dry shampoo, hair spray, sea salt wave spray, hair waxes, finishing balms, hair gel, hair styling creams and more. My intention with this was to create a non toxic and natural hair product guide so you can easily find products that could work well for your hair type. Each category has a shoppable carousel at the bottom so you know where to access them since many of these don’t live beside conventional and toxic hair products on big box store shelves. I have tried to keep them all from the same (my favorite) online market that I love to avoid shopping from multiple stores online. You can peruse around the detox markets online shop as they carry so many different non toxic products in addition to hair products.

First, I want to share a bit of insight into why swapping out your hair products for natural and non toxic options is a good idea. There is limited regulations in the US and Canada when it comes to beauty products and their production. I wanted to shine some light on a few of the common toxicants you want to avoid in your hair care as they can contain some highly toxic ingredients. When you are using hair products often, even daily, this can contribute to a growing toxic load and affect overall health and wellness. As a Woman, one of my major concerns revolves around the use of toxicants that affect our endocrine (hormones) system. In addition to this many of the ingredients are toxic to major organs and systems and are listed as carcinogens. It is so important to have an understanding of what you are using on your body. This isn’t meant to scare but empower you to make healthier choices over time that will ultimately lead to a healthier body.

10 Common Toxicants to Avoid in your Hair Products

It can feel overwhelming when you are searching for non toxic and natural hair care products. Not being familiar with some of the toxicants found in conventional and toxic hair products can add a layer of confusion when trying to vet your favorite products. While I have done the work to narrow down my favorite hair products and natural brands below, it is still so important to have some knowledge of what to look out for when finding a healthier option. There are many offenders but the ones listed below are ten of the most common and most toxic ingredients you want to avoid in your hair care regimen. These include:

Cocamide Diethanolamine (Cocamide DEA): a foaming and thickening ingredient that is known to cause cancer. In the short term it can cause irritation to your skin and eyes such as redness/itchiness.

Petroleum-based Parabens: This ingredient is used as a preservative and unless your shampoo clearly indicates it is paraben free, they are likely in there. This will clog your pores, and are absorbed by your skin, GI tract and bloodstream!

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS): This is used in so many shampoos and hygeine products…. It’s also used in garage floor cleaners! This ingredient mimics the effects of the hormone Oestrogen. This can cause issues such as MS symptoms, Menopausal symptoms, lowering male fertility, and is a risk factor for female cancers like breast and ovarian.

Formaldehyde: Yes you heard me, formaldehyde. A well known carcinogen. Causes problems with your skin, eyes, and respiratory system.

Isopropyl Alcohol: This is meant to get rid of the oil build up in your hair. However, it can dry your hair out to the point of no return. Breakage and hair loss result. Why should you pay for something to wash your hair that will leave you without! Oh and did I mention this ingredient is also used in shellac and wood finish? Yuck!

Propylene Glycol: It’s industrial antifreeze, but in your shampoos it’s meant as a detergent that “cleanses” your hair. It eventually breaks down your hair proteins and causes irritation to your skin and eyes.

4-Dioxane: Another ingredient that causes cancer. It’s also highly used in children’s shampoos and body washes, yikes!

Benzaldehyde: This ingredient depresses your central nervous system, irritates your mouth, throat, eyes, skin, lungs, and GI tract. You may feel nauseous or have abdominal pain associated with this ingredient and assume it’s from something else. Oh, and last but not least kidney damage!

Benzel Acetate: This cancer causing agent can also lead to systemic effects.

Ethanol: Oh dear, this one is listed on Hazardous waste lists! Not that I’m surprised.  This can cause drowsiness and issues with your vision. Over time, it can create disorders of the central nervous system.

Natural and Non Toxic Shampoo & Conditioner

Some of the first hair care products you may want to switch up are your shampoo and conditioner. This can seem like a daunting process because we all have different hair types and goals we want to achieve with our strands. I have listed a number of options that will serve a wide range of hair types below so hopefully you will find something that will match to the type of hair care you need. I have options for typical hair, dehydrated hair, curly hair, color treated hair, itchy scalp in need of Ph balance, brassy hair and more. I also included my favorite shampoo bar option for those who prefer an environmentally friendly option as well as a scalp scrub shampoo that does a great job of lifting build up off the scalp. I have used and vetted each of these options and brands over the years and feel very confident in their performance and quality. It’s just about finding the right fit of natural and non toxic hair products for you and your strands.

Natural and Non Toxic Shampoo and Conditioner for Typical or Fine to Medium Hair

Innersense Pure Harmony Hair Bath: This shampoo in particular is best for fine to normal hair types. This may be one of my favorite Innersense Shampoos if it fits to your hair type. I LOVE the scent of this one and it never weighs down the hair after washing. This sulfate free formula balances hair, leaving it healthy and full of body, without residue or dryness.

Innersense Pure Inspiration Daily Conditioner: A lightweight daily conditioner for fine to medium hair. This conditioner is a great pairing with the Pure Harmony Hair bath. It is lightweight so doesn’t weigh down the hair or leave a greasy film after rinsing. It is a silicone free formula that works to calm frizz and smooth the hair shaft. It is perfect for all hair types and smells delightful.

Rahua Enchanted Island Shampoo: Rahua is well known and established in the green beauty world as it has created high performing hair products for many years. This is one of their newest shampoos and I love the results I get from using it. The smell is incredible: think tropical guava and coconut. It includes plant based Biotin, Vitamins B6, A, C, and E to promote healthy hair and strengthen hair follicles. This also helps prevent premature hair loss. I’d say this shampoo fits well for most hair types and works as a luxury daily shampoo. The perfect vitamin boost to your hair from the outside in.

Rahua Enchanted Island Conditioner: This daily luxury conditioner is the perfect option for all hair types and compliments the enchanted island shampoo perfectly. It infuses the same vitamin and mineral profile as the shampoo yet it allows for a deeper conditioning as this product will sit on the strands a bit longer than a shampoo. This conditioner will add vibrancy to the hair and promote healthy hair growth.

Natural and Non Toxic Shampoo for Dehydrated or Medium to Thick Hair

Innersense Hydrating Cream Hair Bath: If you have very dry and coarse strands you may want to consider trying this shampoo. It is a cream base that will help re-hydrate the hair to bring it back to a proper moisture level. While it may be too much for fine hair, this ultra smoothing blend revitalizes strands in need, delivering bouncy, shiny, and restored hair.

Innersense Hydrating Cream Conditioner: This conditioner if the perfect pairing for the hydrating cream hair bath. It will help being back softness and moisture to hair that has become coarse and straw like. This conditioner is better suited for very dry hair types that are heavier in weight. It will help to moisturize and smooth out frazzled damaged strands.

Evolvh Ultrashine Moisture Shampoo: This is Evolvh’s most versatile shampoo as it works for all hair types. It smells amazing (as do all of their products, some of my favorites) and works to gently cleanse the hair without stripping moisture. The formula infuses antioxidants and amino fatty acids into the hair to strengthen and smooth. This shampoo leaves the hair with a very smooth and shiny finish. I love using this shampoo directly after having my blonde touched up as it helps to counteract the dryness I experience afterwards.

Evolvh Ultrashine Moisture Conditioner: This is Evolvh’s best selling conditioner and it pairs perfectly with the ultrashine moisture shampoo. It is suited to all hair types and helps revive dull and lifeless hair. It will leave you with soft, hydrated and shiny tresses. I prefer to keep this conditioner on the ends only. It leaves my hair smooth and silky without weighing it down.

Natural and Non Toxic Shampoo & Conditioner for Itchy Scalp

Pura D’or Apple Cider Vinegar Thin2Thick Shampoo: This shampoo wasn’t always on my list as it isn’t necessarily the right fit for my hair type. However, when my Mother was struggling with an itchy scalp that was irritated by all of the other shampoo options available, I figured it was due to a PH imbalance of the scalp. This is the only shampoo that kept her scalp from feeling irritated and itchy. It offered relief and fresh clean hair. Apple cider vinegar is known to help balance out PH issues due to its acidity. This may not work for everyone but if you experience itchy irritated scalp and react to other shampoos then this is a great option to try.

Pura D’or Apple Cider Vinegar Thin2Thick Conditioner: This conditioner if the perfect pairing to the Apple cider vinegar shampoo above. It will help alleviate a scalp that is out of balance and will nourish the strands leaving them soft and manageable. It doesn’t sit heavily on the hair and helps promote healthy scalp and hair health.

Natural and Non Toxic Shampoo & Conditioner for Curly Hair

When looking for curly hair shampoos and conditioners it can be important to find one that helps keep your curls together. If I wear my hair with it’s natural curl, I prefer to use a shampoo that is slightly heavier, will eliminate frizz, and help the curls hold together without feeling greasy. I have found that the Hydrating Cream Hair Bath by Innersense works wonder (you can find this one listed above). I also love evolvh’s shampoo and conditioner that are formulated specifically for curly hair.

Evolvh Smartcurl Hydrating Wash: This shampoo is perfect for us curly haired gals who need support with eliminating frizz and keep curls together. This is formulated for curly, thick, or dehydrated hair. Perfect for those with waves, curls or kinks. I use a different shampoo on days I want to straighten my hair but this is perfect at keeping my curls defined and frizz free.

Evolvh Smartcurl Hydrating Conditioner: This conditioner compliments the smartcurl hydrating wash by adding essential nutrients to your strands. It’s really good at hydrating the hair while keeping it light weight. It doesn’t weigh the hair down or leave a greasy film but it encourages the curls and waves to define themselves.

Natural and Non Toxic Anti-Brass Purple Shampoo & Conditioner

Purple shampoo is used predominantly by those with blonde and grey hair to help eliminate brassy tones that inevitably settle in. The purple and violet tones counteract the brass and help blondes and greys look bright and fresh. There are many purple shampoos on the market but most of them are conventional and filled with toxicants. Here are two hair lines that I find really help preserve my blonde between hair appointments.

Innersense Bright Balance Hair Bath: This may be my very favorite natural option for purple shampoo. It is a deep violet hue that helps eliminate brass and yellow tones I usually see from washing my hair with hard water. I always notice an immediate boost to the color and brightness of my blonde after using Innersense’s formula. I rinse thoroughly and then always finish with the bright balance conditioner.

Innersense Bright Balance Conditioner: This conditioner pairs well with the bright balance hair bath and will help to lock in the bright brass free blonde and grey tone in your hair. It nourishes the strands without leaving the hair feeling heavy. I love the smell of these products and feel like my color extends longer when I rotate these into my hair routine.

Rahua Color Full Shampoo: This singular color-preserving shampoo is formulated from pure, plant-based ingredients. Rahua’s exclusive color protection complex-appropriate for all shades of color-treated and highlighted hair-enhances and extends color. It isn’t a traditional purple shampoo that deposits a deep violet to tone and cool the hair, rather it enhances brightness and removes impurities that build up causing color issues. Scented with the exotic fragrance of gardenia flowers, this formula keeps color at its peak and hair and scalp healthy and hydrated.

Rahua Color Full Conditioner: The perfect complement to Rahua’s Color Full Shampoo, Rahua’s Color Full Conditioner is formulated from pure, plant-based ingredients. Infused with the lush scent of gardenia, this rich and creamy conditioner-suitable for all shades of color-treated or highlighted hair-uses our exclusive color protection complex to prevent fading and protect your color investment. Amazonian lilac clay reduces brassiness and Rahua, morete and flaxseed oils nourish and strengthen each strand, leaving hair soft, lustrous, and manageable.

Natural and Non Toxic Shampoo & Conditioner for Color Treated Hair

Innersense Color Awakening Hair Bath: Revitalize color treated hair with this 100% color safe gentle cleansing shampoo. This shampoo is crafted with coconut and pumpkin seed oils, shea butter and other emollient plant ingredients that enhance and protect color, delivering naturally clean, healthy and vibrant hair, without residue, dryness or fading. It is complimented well by the Innersense Color Radiance Daily Conditioner.

Innersense Color Radiance Daily Conditioner: This is a rich daily conditioner used to revitalize color. It works to nourish color-treated hair with this rich conditioning cream crafted with rice bran oil, aloe vera, avocado, sunflower extract, emollient oils and flower essences. Lightweight and build up-free, it moisturizes and strengthens hair while delivering energy and shine.

Evolvh SmartColor Color Protecting Shampoo: This shampoo is perfect for maintaining vibrancy and color retention. It is an ultra-protective, anti-fade shampoo that keeps color in and impurities out. It is a breakthrough color-preserving formula that gently cleanses, while targeted amino acids strengthen and protect against damaging dyes and other color treatments. It keeps color treated hair healthy and vibrant between salon visits. Perfectly complimented by the Evolvh SmartColor Color Protecting Conditioner.

Evolvh SmartColor Color Protecting Conditioner: This conditioner works with the same technology and formula used in the shampoo to maintain vibrancy and color retention. A great option to keep hair healthy and bright between salon visits. It is an innovative, color-preserving, and reparative formula that deep conditions while targeted amino acids strengthen and protect against damaging dyes and treatments. It leaves hair soft, smooth, and shiny with vibrant color.

Natural and Non Toxic Specialty Shampoo (Exfoliation + Sustainable Bar)

Goop G-Tox Himalayan Salt Scrub Shampoo: I LOVE this scalp scrub shampoo for so many reasons but it is especially helpful when there is build up near the scalp. After using this product your hair will feel weightless and bouncy. It allows the hair at the scalp to lift away naturally so that it doesn’t sit heavy on your head weighed down by excess product build up. I always rotate this scrub shampoo into my hair care routine between other shampoos to ensure that build up is kept at bay. It smells beautiful and rinses out easily leaving you with a fresh blow out feel.

Odacite 522M Soap Free Shampoo Bar: If you’re looking for an environmentally friendly option then a shampoo bar is your best bet. Shampoo bars eliminate plastic bottle waste and often last quite a while. I was first sent this bar years ago to trial and I was hesitant at first. I would have never personally purchased a shampoo bar in fear that the formula would not work for my hair. Surprisingly, this bar lathers into a good amount of product to scrub through the hair and ends. It does a great job at removing build up but it doesn’t strip the hair. It is a soap free formula that also includes skin loving ingredients like castor oil to ensure moisture and hydration are kept in tact.

Natural and Non Toxic Hair: Dry Shampoo

Dry shampoo is one of the best hair product “inventions” to ever surface, in my humble opinion. Everyone has those moments where they’re trying to mentally fit in where they need to add a hair wash between their busy schedules. Sometimes you just don’t have the time before an event or day out and this is where dry shampoo shines. When I was a teenager, we often reached for a bottle of baby powder to get the job done but this is filled with toxic ingredients (not to mention Johnson and Johnsons was sued for knowingly adding carcinogenic and highly toxic ingredients to their baby shampoos). This method also leaves the hair with a heavy white film regardless if your hair is light or not. There is no doubt the baby powder method is outdate, even archaic. So we’ve collectively moved onto bigger and better things. Thankfully, many natural hair product lines have made it their mission to create effective yet healthy dry shampoos. They don’t leave a white cast on the hair. Some brands even create a darker option for those who aren’t blonde. There are also a few different application styles and mediums. Some are powder, some are spray, some are even foam. These dry shampoos listed below are ones that I have personally tried, used and loved enough to share with you all. You can’t go wrong with any of them.

Innersense Refresh Dry Shampoo: This dry shampoo is unique from the rest as it applies as a wet mousse. At first, this deterred me but it really truly works! You can apply it anytime but the suggestion is to apply the night before to allow for dry time. That being said, it doesn’t take much time for it to dry and absorb the oils from your scalp and hair. This dry shampoo smells amazing and does a great job at adding volume to the roots of your hair. This may be one of my very favorite natural dry shampoos and it doesn’t leave behind as much film as a powdered dry shampoo would. I highly suggest trying this one out.

Captain Blankenship Refresh Dry Shampoo: This Dry Shampoo was originally formulated in a shaker bottle, but over the years they’ve redeveloped the application method and created a spray bottle. It is a powdered dry shampoo that does a great job of absorbing the oils in your hair and scalp. This brand is one of two that offers an original formula as well as a tinted formula for those with darker hair. This is a more budget friendly option.

Brigeo Scalp Revival Charcoal + Biotin Dry Shampoo: This is a lightweight dry shampoo that is conveniently formulated in a spray bottle for easier application. This dry shampoo has a unique feature in that it encourages hair growth as you wear it. The addition of biotin into their formula will encourage the hair follicle to produce growth while the charcoal works to detox the scalp by drawing out impurities.

Rahua Voluminous Dry Shampoo: Rahua’s dry shampoo is a perfect option for those who want to add a little bit of volume to your hair. It will help to absorb oils that weigh the hair down and offer a bit of a lift to your style at the same time. This non aerosol spray option has a pleasant mild scent that is not too overpowering yet gives that freshly washed feel to your strands.

Kaia Naturals Overnight Dry Shampoo: Kaia Naturals developed a unique product that is time activated to help absorb oils and impurities overnight as you sleep. Simply apply the non aerosol spray dry shampoo to your scalp and surrounding hair and go to bed. The formula will absorb oils and impurities while the added charcoal will eliminate any poor odor from your strands. It also comes in two different shade options for both blonde and brunette/darker hair colors.

Natural and Non Toxic Hair Oil, Serum, Protectants + Detanglers

Hair oils, serums, protectants and detanglers are some other popular hair products that are in the homes of many.  They are often loaded with toxicants and synthetic fragrances which are incredibly difficult on the endocrine system and your overall health. Just like a dry shampoo, these types of products are intended to sit on the hair long term and not rinse out. This means that that full absorption of the harmful ingredients is inevitable over the time span you wear them. Thankfully some of my favorite hair lines have created some of the BEST alternatives to conventional products. I’d have to say that these products listed below are superior to any of the toxic options I’ve ever used in my life. Not only do they omit harmful ingredients but they use the most nourishing ingredients in their place. This has changed the quality of my hair and I am forever grateful to these botanical products.

Agent Nateur Holi(Locks) Strengthening Hair Serum: Agent Nateur is well known in the wellness industry for their use of the highest quality botanicals. Their blends are carefully formulated to deliver results.  The Holi(Locks) serum is specifically for strengthening, detangling and is effective as an anti hair-fall serum. Backed by advanced hair science and clinical studies, Holi(locks) is a high potency overnight serum that helps restore hair, induce shine, stimulates optimal hair health and stops excessive hair fall out. When applied topically for at least 12 weeks, the overnight strengthening serum helps your hair to appear denser, thicker and fuller, all without the use of harsh silicones. Holi(locks) is a treatment oil and is NOT a styling oil (See Hair(silk) peptides serum below for a styling oil) . Holi(locks) is to be left in hair for a minimum of 8-12 hours and then you wash, style and finish with hair(silk) peptides. It will detangle and make your hair incredibly silky smooth.

Agent Nateur Hair(silk) Peptides Soft Hydrating Hair Serum: If you’re looking for a good quality hair oil that will replace that synthetic and toxic bottle of morrocan oil then Hair(silk) peptides serum might just be the one for you. I love using this oil to smooth out my hair during styling and to help add nourishment to my strands. This hair oil has a blend of nourishing oils, restorative proteins, and replenishing conditioners.  Hair (silk) peptides is unique from other hair oils because it works with your hair overtime, not just for a day. Formulated with french silk peptides, hyaluronic acid, and monoi – ingredients that hydrate, revive and soften your hair, without the use of harsh silicones.

Maya Chia Power Fol Advanced Multi-Correctional Hair & Scalp Treatment: If you’re looking for a serum treatment that will target both the health of your hair and scalp, then this serum is a great option. Maya chia is known for it’s high quality wellness oils. What started as a skincare brand has evolved over the years into a brand that is known for oils that support good health and conditioning all over the body. This now includes high performing hair oils. The Power Fol Advanced Multi-Correctional Scalp and Hair Treatment is a patent-pending, fast-absorbing, ultra-lightweight, yet potent infusion of the most nutrient-dense proprietary blend of Multiple Peptide Sources, Amino Acids, Collagen (from a vegetable source), High-Quality Antioxidants, Fermented Minerals, Phyto-Actives and Adaptogens. The formulation takes a comprehensive approach to overall hair wellness, encouraging the look of denser, stronger and healthier hair. Additionally, Pea Peptides impart immediate visible volume to the hair in addition to providing proven long-term benefits.

Maya Chia The Mane Agent Advanced Molecule Bond Repair: This is Maya Chia’s second restorative hair product. The Mane Agent is an innovative, patent-pending, multi-correctional, at-home, no-rinse, lightweight bonding treatment that covalently bonds to amino acids and keratin fragments in the hair, including broken disulfide linkages. This treatment works to deeply repair, reduce breakage significantly, nurture and protect the hair’s bonds while enhancing the volume of the individual hair shaft.  The cornerstone of the advanced clean formulation is the proprietary Chiaplex™ complex. This innovative complex deploys a combination of chia seed extract, polysaccharides and amino acids work to heal and repair the broken disulfide bonds of the hair. As well, the agent forms long molecular chains inside the hair shaft, which works to restore the damaged keratin fibers.  A core benefit is the technologically advanced bonding agent will actually activate with heat to repair your hair.

Ranavat Botanics Mighty Majesty Fortifying Hair Serum: This hair serum is part frizz-smoothing serum, part natural hair perfume. It smells like an explosion of wild jasmine—this blend of nourishing plant extracts and oils smooths fly-aways, moisturizes to help prevent breakage, and conditions the scalp as well as the hair. It’s made with just three precious ingredients—jasmine, sunflower, and amla (a source of vitamin C) oils—which are extracted using a cold-pressing method to maintain potency, so a little goes a long way. We love the intoxicating scent as much as we love the serum’s many uses: Apply it to just-washed hair as frizz control, work it through dry hair to moisturize and refresh, or leave it on overnight as a deep-conditioning hair and scalp mask.

Rahua Heat Protectant Shield: There aren’t many natural heat protectants on the market so this product is a bit of a unicorn. It works incredibly as well. Mist on and shield strands as you heat style. Rahua Heat Protectant is a plant-based leave-in spray that protects against heat damage, nourishes strands and leaves hair smooth and healthy. The heat resistant plant complex safeguards strands from heat styling tools and improves hair’s elasticity, preventing breakage. I highly suggest investing in a good heat protectant like this one if you are an avid heat styler.

Rahua Hydration Detangler and UV Barrier: This formula detangles and offers a softness and shine to the hair without the use of toxic silicones which will coat the hair and not allow it to breathe. It has the most incredible Tropical scent which always keeps me coming back for more sprays. This is a nourishing leave-in detangler that tames tangles, minimizes knots, prevents breakage, and smooths frizz. Just a few spritzes and a comb effortlessly glides through hair. I use this on my daughter as well who has a lot of hair but the strands are thinner individually which results in more tangles after washing. The formula moisturizes, softens, and smooths all hair types while working to support color-treated hair from the elements like UV rays and pollution.

Natural and Non Toxic Hair Masks

Hair masks are one of those “extra” products that add a boost of health to the hair. I tend to reach for a mask when I notice my hair is in need of some TLC. In my case, I most often reach for them when my hair feels parched and dehydrated. Masks offer a deeper targeted treatment to the hair depending on the hair type. They leave hair feeing revived and my strands generally style better when they’re at their healthiest. I love having at least one of my favorite hair masks on hand at a time. I use them every few weeks or when my hair asks for it. Hair masks are especially helpful if you shower with water that doesn’t agree with your hair (ie. hard water), have just had your hair processed with color, or your hair is generally dehydrated. Though masks can be helpful to all hair types. Here are a handful of my favorite hair masks to boost the health, feel, and function of your strands.

Rahua Omega 9 Hair Mask: This is one of the first natural hair masks I fell deeply in love with. I was pleasantly surprised to see that it performs at salon quality and really helped replenish my hair and bring it back to base line. It is incredibly nourishing, adds softness and hydration to strands, and leaves my hair bouncier and easier to style. Almost as if I have just left the salon with a fresh professional blow out. Crafted from plant-based ingredients, this intensive, professional-strength conditioning hair mask is designed to work like an in-salon treatment, deeply penetrating the hair shaft and fortifying it from root to tip, leaving hair strong, soft, shiny, and hydrated. It is naturally scented with calming lavender and uplifting eucalyptus. I recommend this hair mask for all hair types and for those who want a professional salon quality type mask.

The recommendation for using this mask is applying once a week after shampooing, generously from roots to ends and leave on 5-15 minutes. Then rinse, style and revel in glossier, smoother and healthier hair.

Rahua Color Full Hair Mask: This hair mask is especially helpful for those of us who have naturally lighter shades of hair or who color process to blonde/grey shades. It has similar properties to the color full shampoo and conditioner listed above and helps restore brightness to dull blondes and greys. I often use this as a boost when I notice my blonde is starting to go brassy. In addition to supporting hair color, this mask works similarly to the omega 9 hair mask above. It is a deep conditioning mask that will restore softness, shine, vibrancy and moisture to the hair. I often use this mask when I’m getting further away from my last hair color treatment. It helps keep my hair color from looking yellow and brassy between salon visits. I personally love the Omega 9 for all hair types and if you are experiencing major dehydration. The Color Full mask is better for blondes and greys while also delivering a boost to the condition of the hair.

Before or after shampooing hair, apply generously all over, comb through. Leave in 10-15 minutes. Rinse. Or lightly rinse for an effortless leave-in treatment. Recommended Frequency: once a week hair treatment; Fine Hair: Use 2+ pumps of mask; Thick Hair: Use 4+ pumps of mask.

Briogeo Dont Despair, Repair! Conditioning Hair Mask: This mask is another great overall conditioning mask for all hair types. It is nice to rotate in every so often to ensure your hair is feeling healthy, bouncy and soft. This is a Deep Conditioning Mask packed with massive amounts of nutrients and hydration. It helps to return hair to its natural vibrancy. Dry, brittle, over-processed hair will be rejuvenated with Briogeo’s unique NOVA complex and a potent formulation of B-vitamins, rosehip and argan oils, algae, and biotin. The mask quickly works to reverse damage, adding shine and strength to each hair. This mask is especially great for brittle color treated hair that needs a little boost.

After shampooing, massage into the hair, ensuring the conditioner is evenly applied. Leave in for five to 10 minutes before rinsing. For even deeper conditioning, cover the hair in a plastic cap to retain moisture while sitting under the dryer for 30 minutes, then rinse. Don’t Despair, Repair!™ should be used once per week or every two weeks.

Innersense Hydrating Hair Mask: This is a third masking option for all hair types that addresses moisture and overall conditioning of the hair. This mask is slightly more budget friendly although comes in a slimmer container. It is an intensely nourishing formula inspired by their Allure Award-winning Hydrating Cream Conditioner (see above in shampoo and conditioners for medium to thick/dehydrated hair types). The ultimate reparative formula, of their masque features a richer concentration of tamanu, flaxseed and monoi oils to restore lost nutrients and repair the hair cuticle and a deep diving dose of quinoa protein to rebuild hair’s fractured and fragile cortex.

Ranavat Mighty Majesty Glossing Hair Masque: Ranavat is one of the most luxurious skin and hair companies. I have been using them for years since the companies inception and I have always been blown away by the quality and richness of these products. If you are looking for luxury then look no further. Ranavats products are inspired by the owners Indian background and are rooted in time tested beauty rituals and luxurious natural ingredients. This glossing masque is no exception to their line of incredible products. It is a fast acting mask that delivers visible results in 5 minutes. This hair treatment leaves hair 93% stronger and 3x shinier. It also smells absolutely incredible with the addition of hibiscus and jasmine oils. The smell of these products is enough to have me coming back for more. This mask is safe for all hair typrs including color treated hair. Ranavat in general sits on my “highly recommended” list.

Natural and Non Toxic Hair Styling Products

Styling products help us manage the movement and hold in our hair. Everyone has their own preference of what they use based on hair type and the styles they like to wear. I myself have hair that is naturally curly but will loosen into a wave if I loosen up the product. I also love wearing my hair straight so I happen to check a lot of these boxes. That has made it easy to recommend a full range of different styling products here. I also included my favorite hair wax for shorter hair styles (I use these on my son) as well as my husbands favorite everyday styling cream. We have all of these sitting at home since we have a lot of different hair types under one roof. I can’t recommend them enough. You wont go wrong with any of these natural and non toxic hair styling products, its just a matter of choosing which one is right for the goal you have in mind.

Rahua Cream Wax: If you’re looking for a natural option for hair wax, this is one of my favorites. We have used this on my Son’s short hair to keep the front styled and pushed back out of his face. You can also use it a longer hair to tame certain styles. It’s a great option for slicking back flyaway strands when wearing a ponytail or bun. It gives that sleek pulled back look. This is a denser wax than the smoothing hair balm listed below so it has a bit more holding power. Love this for boys and men who want to style their hair.

Rahua Enchanted Island Salt Spray: Salt sprays are typically used to encourage that perfect beachy wave look. It is similar to when your hair styles perfectly after getting out of a salt water ocean. I find that this sea salt spray helps for days when I want that loose, easy, beachy wave look without it being too styled. If you have hair that will fall into waves after getting wet, this sea salt spray will help encourage the strands to hold together yet look effortless. Crafted with natural pink sea salt for texture and volume, this spray offers light, brushable hold and the lush, tropical fragrance combination of guayaba, hibiscus, and passion fruit. It smells delicious!

Rahua Smoothing Hair Balm: This balm is designed to nourish strands and combat frizz. It features rahua oil—an ingredient treasured for centuries by Amazonian women seeking to nurture and strengthen their hair. Formulated with restorative additions like sacha inchi, morete oil, and gardenia enfleurage oil, this aromatic all-star is perfect for all hair types. Ideal for on-the-go touch-ups, the blend envelops hair in a long-lasting, protective coat of gorgeous shine. Bonus tip: Massage into hair before straightening or curling for extra thermal protection.

Evolvh Total Control Styling Cream: This styling cream is my husbands favorite. He uses it to style his hair each morning. Perfect for those with a bit of extra flow but don’t want a heavy wax or gel. It is especially helpful for those who have thinner strands that needs a lighter product for styling. It has a lighter hold so it isn’t a good option if you’re looking for maximum. It is buildable if you want a medium hold and still allows movement in the hair. Not to mention it smells amazing!

Evolvh UltraFlex Hairspray: This is my favorite go to hairspray to have at home. It smells incredible and helps lock in hair styles like curls and updo’s. It delivers a buildable hold and adds shine to your hair. This ultra-flexible multitasker is fast-drying, yet happy to compromise—working wonders on both wet and dry hair. Built for movement, it leaves hair soft and shiny (not sticky or crunchy) and can be brushed out without the flaky aftermath. It also doubles as a dry shampoo to refresh your look, absorb oil, and add body.

Evolvh Superfinish Polishing Balm: Of all the evolvh styling products (actually styling products in general) this is my personal FAVORITE! It smells incredible and is such an amazing product for adding after styling. If you miss those silicone textured hair oils like morrocan oil that helps keep everything feeling smooth and put together, then you will LOVE this polishing balm. It has no silicones but the texture is exact. This means it will deliver that incredible smoothing texture but without destroying the health of your hair and locking out nutrients from being able to penetrate your hair. A cult favorite, this balm hydrates, smooths, tames flyaways, and adds strength to minimize breakage and splitting. Plus, it protects against heat & UV damage. This first-of-its kind silicone-free formula performs like an oil without the grease or heaviness for a flawless finish every time. I can’t say enough good things about this product. It’s their number one formula in my opinion and I think every girl should have one sitting on their counter. I promise you will not be disappointed.

Evolvh Wonderbalm Magic for Curls: If you’re looking for a product to help hold curls without that old school dippity doo crunch, then this balm might just be your new best friend. This balm will also work for straightening the hair out smooth but I prefer the polishing balm above for that. That being said, it is a super versatile product if you like to wear your hair both curly and straight!  It is a multitasking plant-powered serum that makes dryness, frizziness, and flyaways disappear. A little goes a long way—transforming even the dullest, unruliest, most shapeless hair into softly defined curls or silky straight strands. No crunchiness or stickiness.

Evolvh Instavolume Volumizing Mousse: If you prefer to style your curls or waves with a mousse product then you will love this one. This is a multitasking foam that can boost volume and lift, defines curl, smooths strands, encourages style memory, and boasts built-in heat and UV protection. Tresses are left shiny and bouncy—never crunchy or sticky. Like all evolvh products, it smells heavenly. The most perfect natural and non toxic hair mousse on the market.
