Root 100% Lash + Pretty Gloss Review

March 23, 2018

I have had my eyes on all the pretty colour palettes coming from Root for a while now. Make up is something I’ve played with since I was a little girl, then I went through the awkward “over makeuped” teen stage, to finally settle into the “enhance what you already have” game. I love a good nude lip,  voluminous lashes and neutral palettes. So anytime I can get my hands on new mascara and a lip balm I’m in my happy place.

I was gifted the Emma pretty gloss and the 100% lash mascara from Root to share my honest thoughts on them. Ive found that they perform, are made with clean ingredients and are also budget friendly! I’ve added them both into the mix of my everyday makeup routine, so I figured I would tell you all about these two new additions and how they have faired. Before I get into all the pretty details, its important to note that all Root products are “Vegan, Gluten Free, Paraben Free, Artificial Dye & Fragrance Free”. Those stats get a 10 out of 10 in my books, and now that we know that Root is safe and made cruelty free I’ll share why I love these two products and have added them into my makeup bag.

 – Emma Pretty Gloss –

Root’s pretty gloss in Emma is now one of my everyday go to’s and a replacement for one of my old favourite lip products from MAC, their lustregloss. I go between lipsticks and glosses but sometimes I have a hard time finding a “nude” lip colour that actually looks nude on my skin tone. I am pretty pale in the winter and many lip colours have a “too much” effect on me during this time of year. Emma pretty gloss has a slight bubble gum tone and creates a “your lips but better” look which is perfect for everyday wear (swatched in photo below). What I love most about this  particular shade is that it has no shimmer. While I love shimmer sometimes, I find that softer gloss palettes in most brands almost always have shimmer and sometimes I prefer one without too much glitz and glam.

100% NATURAL • VEGAN • GLUTEN FREE • CRUELTY FREE
90% ORGANIC INGREDIENTS •

Organic Castor Oil, Organic Coconut Oil, Organic Sunflower Seed Oil, Organic Cocoa Butter, Organic Grape Seed Oil, Kaolin, Organic Shea Butter, Organic Carnauba Wax, Jojoba Oil, Vitamin E, Organic Lemon Peel Extract, Vanilla Planifolia, Organic Carrot Powder, Oregano Leaf Extract, Organic Cinnamon Bark Extract, Organic Rosemary Leaf Extract, Lavender Flower Extract, Goldenseal Root Extract • May Contain: Mica, Titanium Dioxide & Iron Oxides Shelf Life • 18 months unopened, use within 6 months of opening. Packaged in a recyclable tube.

The formula is a creamy and smooth texture that glides on easily. It has the same intoxicating vanilla smell that MAC uses in their glosses but without all the synthetic fragrance. If you’re in the market for a new lip gloss and want to try out some new shades then pretty glosses are a good choice. At $16, they’re on the lower end of the cost of a good quality lip gloss and they have a full range of shades for every preference and skin tone. Everything from bright fuchsias to dark berry tones to soft nudes and bright cherry reds. Pretty gloss is a great “pop in your purse and go” option and the shade “Emma” will give your makeup that extra subtle & flattering pop of pink.

– 100% Lash Mascara –

When it comes to mascara, it’s a tough sell for me and that is true of both the conventional brands as well as the natural brands. I have a hard time finding one that does it all by giving me long & full lashes that don’t smudge or create a grey film under my eyes. Not to mention, mascara can be priced pretty high which doesn’t make it very easy for anyone to find the one they love on a budget. 100% Lash Mascara is one of roots best selling products so I was intrigued to try this one!

INGREDIENTS • 100% Natural • 83% Organic .25 oz

Water, Organic Chamomile Hydrosol, Carnauba Wax, Mica, Organic Coffee Powder, Organic Rice Powder, Organic Sunflower Seed Oil, Organic Corn Starch, Lecithin (from Sunflower), Vitamin E (from Sunflower), Oregano Leaf Extract, Thyme Extract, Cinnamon Bark Extract, Rosemary Flower Extract, Goldenseal Root Extract, Organic Lemon Peel Extract, Organic Grapefruit Seed Extract, Vanilla Planifolia, Titanium Dioxide, Iron Oxides.

100% Lash comes in 2 colours: black and brown, I was gifted a bottle of the black formula (black formula pictured above in swatch).  At $14, it is certainly one of the better priced mascaras in green beauty, that being said it is a smaller tube. Smaller tubes may not be appealing upfront, but they’re actually a very smart way of reducing the bacteria that builds up over time in mascara tubes. Mascara is a product that you should be cautious of when it comes to expiry dates, they shouldn’t be used longer than three months (ideally) after opening. This is to ensure that the formula doesn’t grow bacteria over time. You can actually give yourself a staph infection from using old and expired mascara and the eyes are never an area you would want to have an infection. Your sight is important so having a smaller tube is a good way to ensure you are keeping within that three month time slot. Not to mention, it fits so perfectly in any makeup case and my purse!

After curling my lashes (a must for applying natural mascaras in my opinion, it changes the game completely), I applied roots mascara for the first time and was instantly impressed by its ability to lengthen the lashes. “Lengthening” means that product will get from the base of your lashes all the way to the ends. Mascaras that are able to evenly apply product across the entire length of your lashes will create this look. If you love or need a lengthening effect to your lashes then Root’s mascara is going to be your best friend!

The wand/brush is a smaller length of course due to the shortened tube size. The brush itself has stiff bristles that are shorter and I find that this allows the brush the grab the lashes much easier from the base and continues along the entire lash. After applying a first coat on one side, I move onto the next side. I find that when you go back and forth and allow the one side to set for a few seconds, the subsequent coats are easier to manage and apply (but don’t wait too long and allow the product to completely dry).

Application Tip: get as close to the base of your lashes as possible and wiggle the brush as you brush upwards. Do this everytime for a better grip between your brush and lashes and to keep lashes separated.

I applied three coats with roots mascara to get a fuller effect. Three coats seems to be the key! I find the look and application of this mascara to be similar to that of the coveted (yet toxic and not cruelty free) Maybelline Great Lash mascara. It’s a great natural dupe for the pink and green tubed conventional mascara. The ingredients are 100% natural and MUCH cleaner for the same effect.

After wearing the mascara all day I found my favourite part of this formula. Absolutely NO smudging, NO flaking and NO residual grey formula under my eyes at the end of the day. This is particularity tough to find in a natural mascara so I was incredibly impressed by this alone. If you have sensitive eyes and can’t handle mascaras that flake or slide into your eyes, then Root is a great option for you. It is also the closest formula to water resistant I have found in a natural mascara. Two thumbs up!
