I was walking through the health food store the other day and was reminded of just how expensive these sprouts can be. There was a small container of broccoli sprouts sitting in the cold area with an $8 price tag. It just confirmed for me that my goal to make as many pantry staples and food items from scratch is a good time investment. That being said, growing your own sprouts at home takes very little time and costs next to nothing. Once you’ve got the seeds and jars ready to grow at home, you will have sprouts for a micro fraction of the cost.
All you really need to get started growing your own sprouts are some glass mason jars, a straining lid, a resting stand and some seeds. All of which cost very little, you will quickly make up the cost of your equipment after making sprouts a couple of times. You can find all of these tools on my Amazon Storefronts, just head over to my Links & Codes page and scroll to the bottom to find my personally built Amazon storefronts (options for both Canada and US).
Once you have all of your items ready to go, you can begin the process of growing your sprouts. Here is a quick recipe card that breaks down the steps. You can also watch my How to grow sprouts video for a visual representation of how to do this over on my instagram.
How to Grow your own Sprouts
Materials
- 2 tsp Sprout Seeds (of your choice)
- Running Water
- 1 Mason Jar
- 1 Mesh sprouting lid or cheesecloth with rubber band
- 1 Sprouting Stand
Instructions
- Add 2 Tsp of Sprout Seeds to a mason jar
- Cover with cool water by about 2 inches and let the seeds soak overnight (or for at least 8 hours). Cover the jar with a sprouting lid or a piece of cheesecloth secured with a rubber band.
- Drain the seeds, then rinse and drain again.
- Turn the mason jar upside down over a plate to drain excess water.
- Turn the jar until the seeds have covered all sides within the jar. This gives them space to grow apart from each other.
- Set sideways on a sprouting stand in a cool place and out of direct sunlight.
- Continue to rinse and drain the seeds each morning until sprouts start to form. This takes approximately 3-5 days.
And that’s it! Now you know how easy it is to grow sprouts and you’ll never have to fork out money for a small expensive container of them at the grocery store ever again. If you want to save this recipe for later, feel free to pin the image below to your pinterest account.
