Clove + Hallow Review + Swatches: Lip + Complexion

June 25, 2018

Clove and Hallow is a high performance green make up brand that has taken the green beauty world by storm since it unveiled a few years ago. It’s no surprise that this makeup performs, as it was formulated by a Makeup artist who was becoming uncomfortable with the ingredients she was seeing in conventional beauty brands and wanted to create a makeup line that would work just as well but didn’t come with the added unnecessary chemicals. This goal has transformed into a growing line of intense beautiful pigments that STAY on the skin and don’t lose their lustre by the end of the day.

You may have already heard me gush about some of these products on the blog. I first tried the matte liquid long wear lipsticks and the concealer back in the Fall. I wrote all about them HERE in my product of the week series. Here’s a little recap:

Lip Velvet

These long wear matte lipsticks rival some of my old favourite conventional brands such as the smashbox matte lipsticks. I am a huge fan of the three nude/berry shades (sugar bear, uptown and cupcake, see shade swatches HERE). The colours stay on your lips, don’t pill up into tiny balls by midday, and are so flattering. I’ve found that you can wear them at full pigment by lining the lips and adding two layers for intense colour pay off. You can also lightly swipe the lips and rub them together for a soft lip tint that looks much softer and natural. Clove + Hallow’s lip product may contain lake dyes, so read up and decide whether or not you’re comfortable with this. They are what give the intense pigment and there are far worse ingredients around but you must do your research and decide what you’re most comfortable with. Matte liquid lip products that stay put are really difficult to create with a clean list of ingredients and I think clove and hallow has done an amazing job. Here is an entire ingredient deck for the lip velvets:

Clean15 Guarantee™ Ingredient Deck: Coconut Alkanes, Isododecane, Hectorite Clay, Polypropylsisesquioxane (silicone to coat pigments), Trimethylsiloxysilicate (silicone to coat pigments), Fractionated Coconut Oil, Shea Butter, Sunflower Seed Wax, Argan Oil, Vitamin E, Iron Oxides and/or FD&C Pigments

Lip velvets are available for $18.00 which is a great deal for a natural matte lip product comparably to other brands. You can check out their Lip Velvets HERE.

Lip glaze

This lip glaze brings me back to the 90s with its application. That’s right, it’s a twist and click! Besides the fact that this gives me total nostalgia, the lip gloss is smooth and pigmented, doesn’t feel tacky, and the colours are super pretty! The texture is soft and creamy and glides on smooth. These are vegan and cruelty free. I’m currently living the shade “candied hearts”, a soft petal pink that’s perfect for summer. They may contain lake dyes, for those uncomfortable with using them. Here is the entire ingredient deck:

99% Natural, 64% Organic

Clean15 Guarantee™ Ingredient Deck: Organic Castor Oil, Sunflower Polyglycerides, Organic Jojoba Oil, Carnauba Wax, Organic Shea Butter, Olive Oil, Silica, Candelilla Wax, Grapefruit Oil, Argan Oil, Vitamin E; May Contain Titanium Dioxide, Iron Oxides, Lake Dyes

Lip glazes sell for only $15.00, a really amazing price point for a natural lip gloss as most run anywhere from $20.00-$45.00. You can check out their Lip Glazes HERE.

Lip Creme

Thes lipsticks come in 9 different shades and glide on the lips easily leaving a gorgeous satin finish. They are hydrating and don’t settle in lines or dry out the lips. I am loving ballerina slippers which is a soft pink that has some coral/peach undertones. I can’t normally wear bright corals so choosing a colour like this offers that pretty punch of summer without looking too much for my light skin tone and features. These lip products are vegan and entirely cruelty free. This lip creme may contain lake dye which may not be something everyone is comfortable with, my suggestion is to always do your research and decide what YOU are most comfortable with.  Here is the entire ingredient deck:

91% Natural, 24% Organic

Clean15 Guarantee™ Ingredient Deck: Sunflower Oil, Organic Castor Oil, Mica, Organic Jojoba Oil, Organic Carnauba Wax, Candelilla Wax, Jojoba Esters, Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil, Grapefruit oil, Orange Peel Wax, Argan Oil, Vitamin E; May Contain Titanium Dioxide, Iron Oxides, Lake Dyes

Lip cremes are available for only $20.00, while most natural lipsticks run for much higher than that.. these lipsticks are a real steal! You can check out their Lip Creme’s HERE.

Lip Swatches

I’ve included a photo taken in natural light without editing to show the swatches of the colours I am currently loving right now. You can also find swatches of the lip velvets on my lips in my blog post linked above.

From Top to Bottom:

  • Lip Glaze in “Candied Hearts”
  • Lip Creme in “Ballerina Slippers”
  • Lip Velvet in “Cupcake”
  • Lip Velvet in “Sugar Bear”
  • Lip Velvet in “Uptown”

Conceal + Correct

This concealer comes in a tube with an application wand attached making it super convenient, especially when travelling. It covers well and has a silky satin finish. I have heard many people rave about its ability to cover red spots and imperfections and I have to agree! I do reach for a different product to go under my eyes for extra brightening but this concealer does the trick if youre looking for something to cover blemishes or hyperpigmentation, in my opinion. Here is the complete ingredient deck:

Clean15 Guarantee™ Ingredient Deck: Coconut Alkanes, Water, Silica, Polyglyceryl-3 Diisostearate, Jojoba Esters, Candelilla Wax, Fractionated Coconut Oil, Cetyl Alcohol, Sodium Benzoate, Potassium Cetyl Phosphate, Octyltriethoxysilane, Vitamin E, Argan Oil, Triethoxycaprylylsilane, Dimethicone; May Contain Iron Oxides

Clove and Hallow’s concealer runs for $18.00, You can check out their Conceal + Correct HERE.

Pressed Mineral Foundation

This Foundation is a dry pressed mineral foundation and comes in a range of 14 different shades to choose from. I tend to go for liquid foundation but what I love about this one is that it builds well, absorbs excess oil so the product doesn’t slide off your face and doesn’t looks caked on like some dry pressed powders can. I love that it still shows my skin underneath but at the same time somehow covers all the imperfections perfectly. I would say this foundation is a medium coverage and finished completely matte. I’ve rounded all the specifications on this product in my foundation guide for anyone who wants to delve a little deeper into this product.

Clean15 Guarantee™ Ingredient Deck: Mica, Silica, Boron Nitride, Fractionated Coconut Oil, Magnesium Stearate, Organic Jojoba Oil, Salicylic Acid, Gluconalactone, Rice Bran Extract, Lauroyl Lysine, Sodium Benzoate, Sunflower Extract, Rosemary leaf Extract, Vitamin E; May Contain Zinc Oxide, Titanium Dioxide, Iron Oxides

It is $22.00 for the pans of mineral foundation, and $8.00 to purchase the reusable foundation compact if you need one to keep your pan in. You can check out their Foundation HERE.

I also want to add that I’m entirely impressed with the price point offered by Clove + Hallow. They are high quality products and they live in some of the most beautiful packaging I’ve laid eyes on. This company could most definitely up their prices but they haven’t which makes it an incredibly affordable and accessible product for anyone who wants to dive into green makeup. In a world where many natural makeup products will break your wallet, Clove and Hallow has definitely offered us up some unicorn products without giving you intense buyers remorse when you look at your bank statements afterwards. Impressive.

I would say this brand is the perfect place to start for anyone who wants highy end and high performing natural beauty products that completely rival the conventional brands seen in stores like Sephora. I have now tried their entire line of make up and haven’t found a product that wouldn’t go into my daily rotation. This line has definitely made some noise lately and after personally experiencing them myself, I totally get it! <3
