I have walked down the grocery store aisle filled with different protein powders and protein bars. I have looked at the ingredient lists on the back of many of these products. Most of them are loaded with poor filler ingredients. While they may help you hit your macros of the day, they certainly are not contributing to robust health. The food industry knows that protein is a huge marketing opportunity. It is definitely important to hit a proper level of protein each day.
Most companies use flashy marketing opportunity to create and sell poor quality protein bars and powders. They know that hitting a proper level of protein can be difficult each day because people have busy lives. So is there a convenient alternative to the poor quality protein options that line the grocery store shelves? I had this same question and spent many years testing and scrutinizing different brands until I found one that actually delivered. If you haven’t heard of a brand called Equip, let me introduce you to one of the few protein companies I will consume and give to my own Family. Here’s my full Equip Prime Protein Bar Review.

10 Health Benefits of Adequate Protein
There is no denying that getting enough protein is necessary for your health. It has become a popular topic of conversation in the last decade or so. People are catching onto the importance of fueling your body with protein whether you’re a body builder or not. Protein is a macro-nutrient that your body requires to function properly. If you don’t get enough protein each day, certain functions of the body can not work optimally. We are seeing a much better understanding of this from society as a whole. It used to be that only body builders and pro athletes really focused on protein. Now the average person has knowledge that getting enough protein into their diet comes with a plethora of health benefits. These benefits include, but are not limited to:
- Hormone Health: Protein regulates normal hormone production.
- Weight Loss: Protein helps with normal weight management.
- Appetite: Proteins helps satiate and regulate appetite throughout the day.
- Immune Support: Protein boosts the immune system.
- Neurological Health: Protein supports brain capacity and function.
- Bone Health: Protein promotes bone mineral density.
- Muscle Recovery: Protein helps accelerate post exercise recovery time.
- Muscle Growth: Protein increases hypertrophy and reduces fat.
- Increases Strength: Protein enhances muscle strength.
- Hair, Skin + Nails: Protein supports the growth and health of our hair, skin and nails.
As you can see, getting adequate protein is linked to some very prominent health benefits. Our bodies require it for major functions such as our brain, hormones, immune system, bones and muscles. It also helps support some important yet less necessary functions such as our hair, skin and nails. There are so many more benefits linked to consuming the proper amount of protein.

How Much Protein Should You Eat Per Day?
This is a common question that most people have asked. The fact is, protein requirements can vary for everyone depending on several factors. That being said, there are basic suggested amounts and guidelines that could help you determine an approximate bench mark for your protein goals.
- In general, your daily basic requirement for protein per day is 0.8 grams per kg. of your current body weight. However, this is a basic suggestions made for a non-active lifestyle.
- For active individuals, your protein requirement could range from 1.2-2 grams per kg. of your current body weight.
Take for example, an 150 pound woman (68 kg.). If living a non-active lifestyle, she could require 54.4 grams of protein per day. However that changes with physical activity level. If she was an active person, this could change to anywhere from 81.6 grams to 136 grams based on level of activity.
It can be difficult to find the sweet spot when it comes to daily protein requirements. The fact of the matter is, most of us are not hitting an adequate amount of protein each day. For those who are tracking and trying their best, it can be difficult to get the right amount simply because we have busy lives. While it’s ideal to consume real whole foods that are protein filled, sometimes things like protein powders and protein bars can help us achieve the amount by end of day. But it truly does matter that we are not opting for garbage and low quality options. There are a few things to consider when choosing the right protein powder or bar. One major consideration is the source of the protein itself: plant based vs. animal based protein.
Plant Based vs Animal Based Protein Powders
There are many different types of protein powders on the market. One of the biggest distinctions between protein supplements are whether they are animal based or plant based. Having spent over a decade of my life as a vegetarian who now focuses strongly on animal based nutrition, I feel very competent on this topic. I have seen first hand the differences of my own health between a plant based and animal based diet. I can tell you my personal experience and I can also share the knowledge I have gained over the years.
Between my personal experience and my knowledge base, I can attest to the immense health benefits of animal based nutrition. That does not mean that I only eat animal foods. It does mean that I do not eliminate them from my diet and ensure I get enough everyday. I was vegetarian for approximately a decade and my health declined over that time significantly. At the root of my issues were hormones that were not being fueled properly by plant foods. While we need vegetables and fruits for certain nutrients, they do not make up for the vitamins and minerals lost from animal based foods. But let’s dig into the differences between animal and plant based foods.
Nutrition Benefits of Beef Protein Isolate
Here are some of the benefits of Beef Protein that you wont get from plants:
- Beef protein is a complete protein
- Beef protein contains all 9 essential amino acids
- The amino acids are in abundance whereas any amino acids found in plant based protein are in low quantities and not always beneficial at those low levels
- Beef protein is well tolerated and less inflammatory to the digestive system
- Beef protein is more digestible than plant based protein

Why is Equip Foods Better?
Let’s start with the company itself. Their mission is to deliver clean and healthy options when it comes to protein powders and other products. They also feel like the protein and supplements world has delivered poor quality for far too long. Consumers have been duped into thinking their protein options are helping them. While they may be meeting certain macros and protein goals, they are hindering other aspects of health by consuming dirty poor quality ingredients and fillers.
Equip is one of the first companies to create a clean protein powder. This is where they began. They have created one of the most delicious whole food line of protein products available. Their protein powder is from beef isolate and equates to the nutritional value of eating a steak. It’s a clean, simple and high quality option that will deliver macro nutrients and nutrition simultaneously. No cheap filler ingredients that lead to long term poor health outcomes.
The goal is to ensure that your food products are still created with whole foods. Equip is one of the only companies that has dedicated themselves to ensuring their ingredient lists are clean and healthy for your body.
