I am an actively recovering (managing) type A personality, business owner and a Mother of two. Stress and cortisol are no new phenomenon to me. What is Cortisol? How does it relate to Stress?

First, it is so important to understand what cortisol is and it’s relationship with stress. Cortisol has an important function within the body. Cortisol can also cause significant health impacts when it’s levels exceed healthy limits. High cortisol creates a cascade of health issues within the body, particularly if you experience chronic or ongoing stress.

Cortisol is a hormone that is produced by your adrenal glands in response to external stress. In a fight or flight situation, cortisol is released as your body’s natural alarm system that something is wrong. When this happens, signals to your brain are sent to shut off non essential functions. This means that when you are stressed, your body and mind are not working at normal function.

Cortisol is connected to functions like your metabolism, immune response and energy levels. It helps the body regulate when a threat is present. However, things like metabolism, immune system and energy become dampened because your brain is telling your body to maintain the most basic and essential functions to keep you alive. This is why people often get sick when stressed because their immune system has been downgraded. It’s also why some people either gain or lose weight during times of stress. It’s also why we feel exhausted when we are dealing with stressful situations.
